Vulnerability, Gender, and Justice. Contemporary Feminist Debates //

The concept of vulnerability has come to occupy a prominent place in various political debates, as well as on the agendas of governments and international organizations. The idea of a generalized vulnerability (associated with mutual bodily exposure and conceptualized by Judith Butler as precariousness) represents  an enabling condition for ethical and political action. Nonetheless, there are differential levels of precarity that need to be addressed.  Its many uses today refer to the risks of poverty, unemployment, or loss of social security, to the exposure to climate change and natural disasters, or to bioethical considerations related to health practices.

This conference will address the multilayered dimensions of vulnerability, intertwined with matters that involve gender and justice. In this sense, it will foster interdisciplinary perspectives within contemporary feminism that provide with analytical tools to understand vulnerability and situations of precarity, and that also explore the possibilities of agency and critical engagement with social relations and institutions.
